- Practice out loud. You will have your notes, but the more familiar and comfortable you are with the material, the smoother it sounds.
- Know time of presentation. Be aware of when in the program you will speak. Have a glass of water near you for a sip before and during your speech.
- Speak more slowly and clearly than you would in conversation. Everyone is listening carefully, so do not let them miss a word.
- Poise and posture. Stand up straight, smile, and make eye contact. Good posture exudes confidence. A smile shows your mood. If you can look around the entire room while speaking, great. Otherwise, be certain to look at the honoree often.
- OOPS! If you make a mistake, pause, refocus, and continue. Most will not notice or remember a slight slip.
- Air and water. Take a deep breath before you begin and continue to breathe while you speak. If you feel dry and parched, take a sip of your water. You do not need to say anything while you do this, just keep going.
- Enjoy your minutes of fame. Know that you are adding to the moment. Pause at a laugh, or emphasis of your words, but do not add commentary or make changes while you speak. The work was done and well rehearsed. Let it flow.
